Community Building Futures for Youth (CBYF) in Saint-Léonard is a youth initiative of the Tamarack Institute proudly adapted by the Saint-Leonard community to meet local needs.

Like the CBAJ network, which is composed of twenty members from across Canada, the neighborhood is committed to improving the living conditions of young people by creating spaces for meaningful dialogue and by improving the services offered to 15 to 30 year olds. Funded by the Government of Canada’s Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), the project is based on a collective impact approach and aims to empower young people so that they can more easily overcome the obstacles they face.

Developed by the MOE Education Committee in collaboration with the CBAJ Coordinating Committee (CoCo), CBAJ’s main action in Saint-Léonard contributes to creating favorable conditions to better support young people in their post-secondary transition, regardless of the educational and professional path they choose. The Saint-Leonard community work committees hope that the vision of young people, their hopes and fears, and collaborative, equitable, inclusive and sustainable solutions will emerge.

In order to prepare for this vast undertaking that will carry the aspirations of the community, the MOE Education Committee has financially supported several actions during the year 2022-2023. They were selected because of their multi-partner nature, their strong impact on young people and their ability to contribute to their successful integration into school and the workplace.

Collective actions have also been developed, including a digital experimentation laboratory (based on the Fab Lab model) that is currently being developed at the Léo-Van (Caravane de Saint-Léonard). Made possible by the Tamarack Institute’s Community Innovation Fund, this learning and collaboration space will help improve the community, cultural and sports services offered to the neighborhood’s youth thanks to the minibus. In order to amplify the voice of the young people of Leonardo and following a call for participation, more than 30 young participants met to reflect on the concept of the collective project as well as on the activities and equipment desired for this space which will be inaugurated in the coming months.

Finally, creative and reflective workshops under the theme What does it mean to be successful for you? are being organized to better understand how to support youth. An extensive consultation this summer will be rolled out and co-constructed with many youth in order to validate how participation in collective activities, programs and projects can reduce risk factors and strengthen resilience factors related to the challenges experienced by the younger generation.

The Table de quartier de Saint-Léonard is a local space for intersectoral and multi-network cooperation that brings together the various players in the area (citizens, community organizations, institutions, etc.) in order to contribute to the well-being of citizens.
